father's day

Father’s Day is a holiday celebrated in many countries around the world to honor fathers and father figures.

The exact origins of Father’s Day are not clear, but the holiday is thought to have been inspired by Mother’s Day, which was first celebrated in the United States in 1908.

The first known celebration of Father’s Day took place in the United States in 1910. A woman named Sonora Smart Dodd organized a day to honor fathers in Spokane, Washington.

Dodd’s father, a Civil War veteran, had raised her and her siblings on his own after their mother died. So Dodd wanted to recognize his sacrifice and devotion.

Father’s Day became an official holiday in the United States in 1972, when President Richard Nixon signed a proclamation making it a national observance.

However, the date on which Father’s Day is celebrated varies from country to country. Many countries celebrate it on the third Sunday in June, but others have different dates.

What Makes Father’s Day Special

Here are a few examples of why we should celebrate fathers and father figures:

1. A Father’s Love:

A young boy was asked to write an essay about his father for Father’s Day.

In his essay, he wrote about how his father worked hard to provide for their family. He also always made time to play with his son and teach him important life lessons.

The essay ended with the words, “My dad may not be perfect, but to me he is the best dad in the world, and I love him more than anything.”

2. A Father’s Sacrifice:

During World War II, a soldier named John Blanchard fell in love with a woman named Hollis Maynell through a series of letters they exchanged.

When Blanchard returned home from the war, he went to meet Hollis at Grand Central Station in New York City. As he waited for her, he saw a man approach her and kiss her.

Devastated, Blanchard turned to leave. Then he saw that the man was actually Hollis’s father, who had never met Blanchard and simply wanted to be there to welcome him to the family.

3. A Father’s Legacy:

A man named Tom lost his father when he was just a teenager, but the lessons his father taught him stayed with him throughout his life.

In particular, he remembered his father’s words about the importance of hard work, kindness, and treating others with respect.

As a father himself, Tom passed these values on to his own children. They in turn passed them on to their children, creating a lasting legacy of love and wisdom.

These stories, and many others like them, remind us of the profound impact that fathers can have on their children’s lives, and the enduring love that exists between them.

Those without Biological Fathers

A Real Life Story by Julie J.

For as long as I can remember the word father was often directed towards several people in my family. I called nearly all my uncles “Dad”.

In the late 70s being born out of wedlock meant there was shame brought upon your entire family.

However, thanks to the Chinese – they believe a love child is the LUCKIEST.

Although my family were of Indian origin, we lived in a mixed cultural community, dominantly the Chinese.

They believe that since you were not planned, not expected and not invited, yet against all odds you were born, you’re then deemed the champion.

My Dad, My First Hero

My surrogate father, who legally adopted me, was thankfully a good man.

This man taught me how to ride a push bike, amongst many other things. He was a great man who taught me never to say “Bappa can I borrow some money?” if you have no means of returning it, because the word borrow means to place it back into the hands that handed it to you.

Instead, he said, I’m your father, so if you ask it will be given to you. Be a person of your words.

And with this I set out to the world on my own. Saying things I meant even if it was being direct and straightforward.

Father’s Day

My dad taught me to be assertive. He also taught me many important values that gradually became a strong foundation later in life.

Needless to say, there were also an army of women (my aunts, coaches, friends) who taught me to be ladylike. Which, to be fair, is a work in progress.

What I’ve Learnt from Being Adopted

If you were not raised with biological parents, the creator will bring you several types of people at different stages of your life to be that parent.

They will appear in the form of teachers, coaches, bosses, romantic partners, guardians and anyone who resembles a father/mother/parent figure.

We may unconsciously seek their approval, which is good to a certain extent. But if we feel angry when it’s not given then there’s a high chance of it becoming an issue.

However, unless you want to continue being this way, it is best to decide that at some stage, being an adult is a better option.
