Why Online Marketing Appeals to Millennials

Online marketing, also known as digital marketing, is an essential component of any successful business strategy in the digital age.

With more and more people conducting their shopping and research online, it’s critical to have a strong online presence that can reach and engage with your target audience.

Effective online marketing encompasses a range of tactics, including search engine optimization (SEO), social media marketing, email marketing, and pay-per-click advertising.

By leveraging these channels, businesses can increase their visibility, drive traffic to their website, and ultimately generate more leads and conversions.

Whether you’re a small startup or a multinational corporation, a well-executed online marketing strategy can help you achieve your business goals and stay ahead of the competition.

Millennials and Online Marketing

When you consider the increase in online resources in recent years, there has never been a better time for millennials to break into online marketing.

At the same time, the lifestyle benefits and convenience also appeal to millennials.

Online marketing and most other forms of digital work are now an opportunity to escape the shackles of a nine to five role.

It allows freedom in remote work and is considered the prospect of becoming location independent.

This attitude may show a shift in perspective. Millennials may seem less concerned with money and more interested in achieving an idyllic or meaningful lifestyle.

However, this does not mean that millennials do not care about money.

Instead, their expectations are significantly higher and take many variables into account, not just a job’s salary.

This change of perspective is not universally popular, however.

Some people are quick to highlight what appear to be destructive or undesirable qualities in recent generations.

Simon Sinek and Superficial Millennials

When leading author and speaker Simon Sinek spoke about millennials at Inside IQ Quest, he showed little sympathy or empathy for them.

online marketing millenialsSinek labelled millennials as unsatisfied, superficial, lazy, and even depressed.

Choosing the label of  “quitters” to portray this generation was arguably the most controversial idea of them all.

It is possible to see why he felt so disillusioned with the behavioural traits we now associate with millennials.

After all, millennials were the first generation to adopt the internet, smartphones and many other aspects of technology.

These devices were supposed to make life easier and more convenient. Subsequent studies produced evidence that they led to a distinct change in attitudes and behaviour.

Instead of going to the local store, people were buying items online. Rather than being patient, millennials were demanding everything should be faster, better and more convenient.

Instead of studying books for a college thesis, students read the synopsis to save time and get ahead of their classmates.

Online marketing took advantage of this desire for instant gratification.

Sinek’s accusations were broad and generalized, but there was some substance to them.

What Connects Millennials and Online Marketing?

The word millennial refers to anyone born between 1980 and the early years of this century.

Online topics and content frequently target this age group, as they are the heaviest users of technology.

Simon Sinek is one of many to take exception to their attitude, especially as it is noticeably different to previous generations.

But who is Simon Sinek? He is a motivational speaker who delivered a TED talk outlining the concept of “Why”.

This theory suggests that people should try and understand why they want to do something, how they’re going to do it and what they want to do.

Furthermore, Sinek is known for carrying out several online marketing studies of famous leaders and organizations and using this research to compile the most common patterns and practices that have led to success.

Millennials understand that why they do something and how they do it will lead to what they want, whether that’s ordering something online for next day delivery or designing a bestselling line of technology.

Opposing Views and Challenging a Generation

Sinek is not alone in his thinking about millennials although there are plenty who oppose his view.

Gary Vaynerchuck is the CEO of a world-leading online marketing enterprise and one of the most prominent motivational speakers in the world.

online marketing millennialsAlthough “Gary Vee” is an astute businessman, he emphasizes motivation both in his public speaking presentations and online work.

Vaynerchuck is a big believer in millennials, and despite agreeing with Sinek on many levels, he challenges millennials to disprove the criticism.

When people say that smartphones have ruined millennials, he laughs.

Vaynerchuck compares this accusation to conservative parents in the 1950s who were disgusted when Elvis Presley began shaking his hips on television.

It may sound funny now, but this was a big deal back then. It made front page newspaper headlines for an entire year.

Although he states that young people need to expect less and work harder, Vaynerchuck also believes millennials have been misunderstood.

According to his view, the generation is very talented yet heavily civilized to the point of inaction.

Convenience and ease are key considerations but nothing worth having comes without effort. online marketing millennials

However, many famous and influential figures also agree with Gary Vaynerchuck.

Several major companies including Facebook, Apple, and Microsoft have a well-known preference for employing millennial candidates because of their mindset.

Vaynerchuck says this shift in perspective, attitude, and outlook is merely another step in evolution and nothing more.

Affiliate Marketing and the Future of Work Online

Also known as referral marketing, this sleek process is fast becoming the best way to make money online and has been adopted by major publishers in every industry.

Online marketing is now also increasingly important for individuals and small businesses seeking to monetize their online content.

Another way to describe it is passive income. Just about any blogger can integrate it into their content. Internet marketing continues to grow exponentially.

online marketing millennialsIt is now a thriving industry and considered a solid foundation for a business model. Some universities in the United States have already begun offering internet marketing courses to cash in on the current demand from this industry.

Although Simon Sinek made some valid points, these were largely stereotypical. They are certainly not true for every person born between 1980 and the early 2000s.

Furthermore, there was no factual evidence to suggest that millennials were worthy of so much criticism.

Such accusations are reminiscent of the reaction of previous generations to far-reaching societal changes.

These attributes are not solely millennial traits. Instead, they are a mindset applicable to anyone who can see the potential of online marketing.

Internet marketing and working remotely may seem a very attractive way to achieve a comfortable lifestyle for many people.

Online Marketing as a Road to Success

With this in mind, we can see why working in online marketing and achieving this kind of independence is so appealing.

online marketing millennialsWhile we may associate these characteristics with the millennial generation, they can already see the bright future of online marketing.

This emerging generation is eager and willing to earn their money.
As Gary Vee suggested, they appear to be taking what is merely the next step in human evolution.

They are using the modern-day tools at their fingertips to make a better life for themselves.
